November 2017

Jet Setters

November was our month for travel.  Scott took a trip to Europe for work which included four countries in five days.  I took a trip to Georgia to visit Meranda Rockett and then we packed up the car and the four of us drove to Park City for Thanksgiving.  It was whirlwind but worth all the jet lag.

Georgia

My first trip to The South was wonderful.  It was as charming as I always imagined it would be and so was my hostess.  I was there four days and I'm dreaming of when I can go back.  Lush woods, lakes everywhere, delicious food, amazing shopping; It was completely picturesque.

On my second day, Meranda drove us to Asheville, North Caroline to visit The Biltmore Estate.  It was such a treat to see so much history in such a beautiful setting.  The smoky mountains were breathtaking and to top it off, The Biltmore was decorated for Christmas.  After our tour, Meranda took me to The Grove Hotel to have dinner on the veranda.  We were able to watch the sunset over the smoky mountains.  We kept joking about our romantic dinner date.

We did lots of shopping and eating in Atlanta and I was so impressed with the city.  My favorite part of the entire trip was spending time with an amazing friend.  Can't wait to do it again!

Park City Here We Come!

This was the boy's first trip to Utah and they are officially fans.  When I told Foster he could live at BYU he could scarcely believe it (we're starting the brainwashing now).  Park City was dusted with snow the day before we arrived and the boys were SO excited.  They loved playing in the snow until Foster (without gloves on) started screaming that his hands were on fire.  Opposite actually, they were frozen.  Once they figured out that gloves and snow boots are their friends, the snow became even better.

This was taken outside of our hotel room near the pool.  The boys played here for over an hour.  Sadly, after our first day the snow began to melt and never reappeared.  I don't think they'll ever forget the fun they had that first day. I know Scott and I never will.

We had a blast walking around Park City's Main Street, shopping and eating....mostly pizza of course.  For some reason, pizza was the official food of our trip.  We were all DONE with pizza by our third day.  We also visited the Park City Museum which told the story of Park City's transformation from a mining town to a ski town.  And if you ask me, a shopping town.

The boys were very impressed by Temple Square and the beautiful Salt Lake Temple.  It was so fun to be with them in such a special place.

Foster was pretty sure this pioneer log cabin was his new house.  He was all ready to move in.

If you ask me, the best part of the trip was tubing at Gorgoza Park.  We went on opening day and the crowds were few, the snow was slick and it was the time of our lives.  Jamie and Peter joined us for the fun and everyone had a great time.  At the very end, Foster insisted on going all by himself.  I knew that I couldn't stop him so I let him go.  He carried his tube up the moving walkway to the top of the hill, went over and said something to guy at the top and the next thing I know, the guy is pushing him down the hill.  The kid makes it happen.  James was old enough to ride down from the very top and without hesitation he went over and over again.  He is turning out to be our little daredevil.  After two hours and with frozen hands and feet, we headed back to hotel feeling extremely happy.

If you ask James and Foster, their favorite day was when we visited Grandma Millie and BYU.  They loved the Bean Science Museum and they are both convinced that if they attend BYU, they will work here.  It was very cool and we were so glad we went.

Meeting Grandma Millie was a treat.  Foster just kept telling her how beautiful she was and both boys asked many times later in the week, if they could go back and see Grandma Millie.  She was so sweet with James, telling him how when she was young she was very shy too but as she got older she grew out of it.  She told him they had a lot in common.

Thanksgiving Dinner

We spent Thanksgiving at The Grand America Hotel.  It was just the right amount of fancy.  The hotel was decked out for Christmas with Christmas windows and a giant gingerbread house.  And Thanksgiving dinner was decked out with all the regulars like sliders and passionfruit tarts.....okay, not the usual fare but we did have turkey and mashed potatoes and it was GOOD.

I remember looking at the ZCMI windows in SLC when I was a little girl so it was so fun to see my boys look at these Christmas windows.

Yeah....Im pretty sure this is not allowed.

Our Utah trip was one we will never forget.  We were in such a beautiful place with people we love, having a blast.  Some of my favorite memories from the trip are the ones where we were in the hotel room(complaining of all the noise from the common room), watching movies (Edward Sizzorhands) and using the bath bombs we bought at the grocery store.  The ordinary things feel pretty magical when done on vacation!

October 2017

October... All Things Lead to Halloween.

Us Olsons love the month of October, mainly because it's the month of Halloween.  We dedicate the entire month to the holiday and if we don't visit a Halloween Store at least once a week, we feel like we are not celebrating properly.  This year we found the scariest Halloween decoration at Home Depot.  It was a 12 ft.  werewolf that  detected movement and growled.  It was terribly scary and the boys couldn't get enough of it.

The Best of October

Preschool Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

It was very bittersweet to attend my last preschool pumpkin patch field trip.  This was my third in a row and I look forward to it each year.  Such a sweet day of hayrides, pumpkin picking and learning all about pumpkins from the pumpkin lady (who I desire to be one day).
Mother Nature was on our side this year because it was cold and rainy the day of the field trip.  It actually felt like fall, it was a miracle.

Foster's Preschool Class and his BF, Charlotte

These two picked perfect little pumpkins.

 Friday the 13th Party

The calendar did us a solid this year and gave us a Friday the 13th in the month of October.  We couldn't let this momentous occasion pass us by without a party.  So we had a raging Friday the 13th Party!  Both boys invited their besties over for some pizza, cookie decorating and outdoor scary movies (Toy Story of Terror and Room on the Broom). The big boys ended up playing some sort of battle during the movie and trying their best to scare Charlotte and Foster.  Everybody had so much fun including mom and dad but mostly mom. ;)

Halloween Festivities

The ward Trunk or Treat party was full of lots of treats, especially this one.  Some of the young women in our ward, dressed up as their leaders, which meant Emma Walton dressed up as little ole' me!  She wore a jumpsuit and vans so basically her costume was on point.

The boys celebrated Halloween at school and Mrs. Hernandez invited Foster to join in on all the fun.  He even got to walk in the Painted Rock Halloween Parade.  He felt like a very big boy.  Foster dressed as Iron Man and James was Indominous Rex.

All my dreams came true this year when the Clifford's asked me to participate in their haunted house. I only did it for one night but the fact that I had no voice the next day means I gave it all I got.  It was so much fun.  The rooms had cameras which captured the action inside the house and then played it in real time on a screen out front.  Scott brought the boys down to watch me scare people on the TV and they almost mustered up enough courage to go in.  In the end, they decided they'd be ready next year.  Let's hope I get in on the action again!

Pumpkin Patching with the Boys

We took the boys to our favorite pumpkin patch at Mountain Valley Ranch.  It's just the right mix of farm meets pumpkins and small crowds which makes it perfect.  We checked out the goats, pigs, chickens and BUFFALO!  And then the boys picked out their carving pumpkins.  We topped off the day with some shaved ice since it was literally 106 degrees that day (I'm sure the buffalo was loving it).  We all left flushed and looking like pumpkin heads.

 The Big Night

Our neighborhood shares our affection for Halloween and does a stand up job decorating their houses.  Scott decked our house out with spiderwebs, hanging witch, skeletons, projected ghosts, black lights, fog machine and spooky sounds.  He gets an A+ when it comes to Halloween decorations.
The boys had a blast trick-or-treating in our neighborhood and saw so many friends from Painted Rock.  James felt extra special that some of the girls in his class made a point to find his house and then made him take a picture with them.  The night ended with a few families of neighborhood boys, gathered at our house while our boys wrestled on the lawn.  It was everything Halloween night should be.

Bella getting into the Halloween spirit.

Foster loved handing out Halloween candy this year.  He was stationed at the front door for at least an hour.  And of course, he took his job very seriously.

All the Other Good Stuff

Church Primary Program

The boys did a wonderful job in the primary program.  Scott was out of town and wasn't able to watch them which was a bummer but they delivered their lines perfectly and I even detected James singing the songs. The children got to make up their own lines this year which was very cute.
Foster's line was: "I can be like Jesus by helping my mom".  He said it with lots of volume and even got a giggle or two.  I was surprised at how well he knew the words to the songs and how poised he was.
James' line was: "I can be kind by helping with my dog at home."  He was nervous to say his line but he stood up there without hesitation and did an amazing job.  I was very proud.

Mother, Son Dance

James and I attended our first ever Mother/Son dance in October.  It was pretty lame actually but James had fun running around with his friends (and not dancing with his mom).  And I settled with dancing with my mom friends.  I cherish any time I have with my boy!
